This field trip relates to the BC curriculum in several key areas, particularly in Art Education 1, Science, ELA, Mathematics, Socials and Physical Education. The Grade 1 students will explore Japanese Canadian culture, traditions, stories, food, and community through a variety of engaging, hands-on learning experiences at the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre.

Students will participate in a Shiratama Mochi Dessert Making Workshop, where they will mix ingredients, prepare their own mochi dessert, and enjoy the food they have created. Through the Tea Lab Workshop, students will explore tea leaves using their senses—touch, smell, sight, and taste—and learn how food and drink can be connected to culture and tradition.

Students will also experience Japanese culture through the story reading of Peach Girl, learning how stories can share cultural traditions, values, characters, and ways of life. Through discussion, students will make connections between the story and their own experiences, families, and traditions.

The field trip will also provide opportunities for students to learn about Japanese Canadian culture and community, explore cultural objects and traditions, and participate in traditional Japanese play, including bamboo stilts. These experiences encourage students to learn through movement, play, observation, listening, questioning, and active participation.
